Medigap Birthday Rule
8/24/2026
This is an annual opportunity to review and compare Medigap plans from insurance providers to find potentially more cost-effective options. It helps prevent being locked into a plan with increasing premiums.
The “Birthday Rule” applies exclusively to Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans and not Medicare Advantage plans.
There is no need to answer medical questions or risk coverage denial due to pre-existing conditions.
The 61-day enrollment window (for Oregon) includes the 30 days prior to your birthday, your birthday itself, and the 30 days following. In some states, the enrollment window differs; please check your state’s enrollment parameters.
To take advantage of this rule, you must already be enrolled in a Medigap policy.
You may switch to any participating insurer and select a Medigap plan that offers benefits equal to or lesser than your current coverage.
